Senior Legal Specialist - Privacy

As the Senior Legal Specialist – Privacy, you will be responsible for developing, supporting, implementing and managing all aspects of Qatar Airways global data protection compliance strategy and advising on legal matters surrounding all applicable data protection/privacy regulations and legislation such as the GDPR. You would also be responsible for drafting, reviewing and negotiation of procedures and policies on a range of legal and compliance matters focussed around data protection and privacy regulatory requirements. You would be providing legal and compliance advice on data protection/privacy law across the QR Group with a view to minimising Qatar Airways’ exposure to reputation and financial risk(s). Understand, interpret, and apply data protection/privacy law(s) and regulation(s) principles to the QR Group’s current and future business strategies.

In this role, the accountabilities would be to:

Provide legal interpretations on data protection laws and regulations with a view to minimising the exposure to reputational and financial risk exposure experienced by the business in accordance with the corporate risk appetite. As a subject matter expert, support third party risk management activities including liaising with the contracts department for Data Processing Agreements.

Support the handling of external enquiries and issues relating to data privacy practices the cases of data processing and withdrawal of consent, the right to be forgotten, and related rights.

Support the handling of internal enquiries and issues relating to data privacy practices, providing advice on information handling aspects such as data protection impact assessments (DPIAs) data storage and retention and other mandatory and non- mandatory best practices.

Monitor and keep under constant review all the firm’s global data protection compliance requirements. Identify, develop and manage robust and measurable time- bound remedial plans for identified gaps where necessary.

Develop and maintain relevant global internal data privacy protection and training.

Inform and advise company management on the Global Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and its ongoing requirements, liaising with the business as required.

Serve as a subject matter expert in the ongoing development and continuing implementation of Qatar Airways robust data protection compliance plan.

Support the development of a systematic global data protection compliance audit plan.

Support the Data Protection Officer as and when required and directed.

Data Protection:

Ensure that any personal data obtained and processed is treated in accordance with data protection principles followed by the Group, as well as applicable Group policies and Procedures on data protection and information security.

Consult the Group’s Data Protection Officer (DPO) office prior to making decisions on the processing, storage, retention and deletion of professional data with regards to responding to Subject Access Requests (SARs), conducting Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIAs) and identifying any personal data breach, if there is no policy or procedure that provides adequate guidance.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with the following skills & experience:

Minimum 8 years of relevant experience

Relevant College or University qualification to min Bachelor's level

Law Degree, Business Administration degree and/or formally recognized senior data privacy certification(s)

Must demonstrate deep knowledge of data protection, data handling and data classification.

Capable of conducting data protection compliance reviews and audit.

Expertise in global and European data protection laws and practices and an in- depth understanding of the GDPR and its application

Proven track record of handling complex issues and negotiating with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Excellent MS Word and other MS Office packages.

Excellent writing, communication, organizational and problem solving skills.

Preferred

Proven track record in a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures

Candidates currently admitted as attorney practicing in data privacy.

8- 10 years of data privacy specific legal experience at a mid to large size law firm, government regulatory entity or in- house corporate role. Experience in a similar position preferably in a multi- cultural environment in management legal, risk and compliance.

Prior experience in dealing with technology related privacy issues (e.g. vendor technical evaluations) is preferred.

Aviation industry experience an advantage.

Experience in dealing with service contracts with a technical background
